Tomatoes may lower stroke risk; girls, sports and concussions; birth ...

Noteworthy this week in the world of personal-health news:

GOOD & GOOD FOR YOU: Grab those last few tomatoes left on the vines and indulge. According to research published in the Oct. 9 issue of the journal Neurology, eating tomatoes and tomato-based foods is associated with lower risk of stroke.

LOOK WITHIN: Mindful meditation, new research shows, can help breast cancer patients fight depression, may reduce loneliness and decrease the body's inflammatory response to stress. The small study was published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

GIRLS & CONCUSSIONS: Girls seemed to fare worse than boys when researches from Vanderbilt University Medical Center looked at the neurocognitive symptoms following sports-related concussions. The study was published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.

BIRTH CONTROL BONUS: Not only does access to free birth control substantially reduce unplanned pregnancies, but that access also dramatically cuts abortion rates, a new study shows.

SENIORS & SURGERY: Older patients who've taken a fall before they undergo surgery are more likely to have prolonged hospital stays, complications and higher rates of disability after surgery, a new study from University of Colorado, Denver, and described on medicalxpress.com shows. Findings were reported last week at the 2012 Annual Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.
