How to Buid Your Professional Network with Confidence

November 26, 2012

Page 1 Page 2

Adrenaline rush, anxiousness, nausea, dry throat, sweaty hands , check.

If you?re feeling this way, I?m going to venture to guess you?re attending a business networking event (or speaking at one). It?s also likely that you don?t know a single person in the room and you are standing in the corner hoping and praying that someone will take pity on you and strike up a conversation.

But it doesn?t have to be that way.

Attending a professional networking event with a little strategy can go a long way.

You can learn to network with confidence without morphing into one of those people that immediately pitch their business and shove their business card in your face. ?Ick!?

Here are a few tips and icebreakers to ease your nerves before your next professional networking event:

1. Get interested.

Ask, ?What brought you here today??

This is a great question to ask to break the ice and learn a about fellow attendees and their event goals. This also gives your new contact an opportunity to do a little ?business bragging? of their own, while you listen intently.

2. Be authentic.

Go ?au naturale,? so to speak.

Stumped for something to say? Most likely you?re not the only one. Walk up to someone and introduce yourself. Then tell people it?s your first time attending the event (if that?s the case) and you don?t know anyone. People connect with authenticity.

Relationship Columnist Ana Loiselle examines the Five Stages of ...

Many people have unrealistic and idealized expectations of love relationships. They believe that the excitement and emotional highs of new love will last forever. It comes as a huge shock when the euphoria wears off and disillusionment sets in. Couples often struggle with this change, believing they have ?fallen out of love? and wonder what to do next.

So why does love change from feeling great to feeling wrong once you take that step of commitment?? One reason is that relationships go through predictable stages, and by understanding these stages, couples can be better prepared to maneuver each stage successfully? be less likely to blame their partner or experience self-doubt about their relationship choice.

So let?s take a look at these stages:

There are 5 stages of love that have been identified by Dr. Susan Campbell. All couples move through the different stages at different speeds and will move back and forth from stage to stage but both will predominately be in the same stage at the same time:

? Romantic Love Stage

? Power Struggle Stage

? Stability Stage

? Commitment Stage

? Co-Creation Stage

Stage I ? Romantic Love

All relationships begin with this stage. The need satisfied here is love and belonging. This stage is characterized by its dream-like qualities, fantasies, hopes for the future, the possibilities and the asking of ?what if.? Everything is wonderful, beautiful, fun and exciting.? The pair unfortunately are brain dead! They focus on similarities and do things to please each other.

Differences are viewed as bad so are denied. The emphasis is on how to fit and move together and soon they look like they?re glued together at the hip. Each will do anything to get along. You deny part of yourself and the thinking is ?Now that I have this other person I am complete and happy.? This stage is short lived but does allow for the building of a foundation for the relationship in the future. However, real love cannot begin at this stage so paradoxically one must fall out of love to learn to love.

This stage lasts, on the average, two months to two years. Romancing takes up a lot of energy with all the courting and pretenses and trying to be the same ? eventually you begin to tire. As well, melding at the hip becomes uncomfortable. When the cost to your individuality becomes too great you begin trying to change the other person or make them conform.? Guess what you get? Resistance with a capital ?R?; but you try to insist and there is a fight, leading to the next stage, which is ?

Stage II -Power Struggle

In this stage both parties struggle for power and some freedom. There is an awareness now that you are different but the premise remains that differences are bad ? your differences are magnified. You seem to have nothing in common anymore and everything the other person does is wrong. There is a pulling away from each other, and a need for space ? all of which is quite normal.

This is a critical stage where divorce occurs most frequently and when couples seek counseling. The fight is for boundaries and clearly defining unacceptable bottom line behaviors.? There is a nervousness about the future and some questioning whether there will even be a future together. This stage is a prerequisite to readiness to relate to each other as whole people.

See this stage as a positive one, an opportunity to journey together, to learn how to negotiate, to equally care about your needs getting met as you do about your partners. It is possible to have one partner still in the romance stage while the other is into the power struggle stage. This can be painful when the one in the romance stage finds that what he or she does for love and belonging leaves the other feeling oppressed (i.e., he brings you flowers which was once okay but now you feel controlled by his actions and react by desiring even more space).

Stage III ? Stability

The needs satisfied in this stage is freedom and choice. You are now aware of each other?s personal world instead of just your own and the difference is okay. It is finally clear you are not going to reshape your partner. Clear boundaries are determined.

There is a sense of loss and a certain sadness at this time as your realize dreams aren?t reality. The power struggle was hard and has weathered you. You feel older and wiser. If you had not learned good relationship and coping skills as a child the power struggle stage was even harder than it had to be.

This is a resting time. The war is over and it?s time to relax. You breathe a sigh of relief. The danger at this stage is you may start to move apart as each does their own thing. There is a realization that each other?s? paths in life may be different. There may be a feeling of boredom, a sense of not being connected and having nothing in common.

This is the second most common stage for counseling or divorce. At first it feels good to agree to stop changing the other but life is not like that. Life is about growing and changing. The positive aspect is that at this stage you have history and it can be used to your advantage. Don?t throw away the relationship easily. At this time you either learn mutual respect or you go back to the second stage.

Stage IV ? Commitment

This is the only stage where there really is a readiness for marriage though people usually have already married in the romance stage. In this stage you are wide awake, making clear choices about yourself and your partner, based both on individual differences and those things you have in common. You see clearly who you are and what you want as well as who your partner is and what they want. This is the basis of a healthy relationship.

You now choose each other with awareness of past, present and direction to the future. The needs fulfilled here are a balance of love, belonging, connection, fun, and freedom. You don?t need each other, you choose to be with each other.

If one of you is in the stability stage and one ready for commitment, you will either both remain in stage three or could return to stage two. Both need to be ready for the commitment stage. Though parts of previous stages may reappear you probably would have done enough work to have developed strategies for dealing with problems. The statement can now be made to your partner, ?I choose to love you knowing all I know, good and bad.?

Stage V ? Co-Creation/Bliss

In this stage you are two people who have decided to be a team moving out into the world. This world may include children, a project, a church, a joint business venture, etc. You move beyond the relationship. The danger at this stage is over involvement with the outside world and relationship being neglected. The relationship must be continually nurtured along the way. There needs to be time for you, for me, for us and for them. This is difficult sometimes and choices must be made.

A test of where you may be in the relationship is: If your spouse and children are away for a while, who gets the first hug upon their return? If it?s the kids then maybe it?s time to take a better look at ?us.?

These stages are not a linear process; it is a circle spiraling upwards so when you hit a ?certain stage in the power struggle it becomes easier. You retain stages and bring them forward as you grow ? you are in one stage or another at any given time with bits of the others thrown in for good measure. Knowledge of the stages helps move through them.

Talking tough, Netanyahu walks cautiously in Gaza conflict

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Just hours after a bomb exploded on a Tel Aviv bus, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to a truce with the very people his government blamed for the blast -- the Islamist Hamas rulers of Gaza.

Wednesday's decision to pull back from the brink of a full-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip despite the attack, which wounded 15 people, belies Netanyahu's international image as an uncompromising, bellicose hardliner.

Indeed, the eight-day campaign against Hamas militants in Gaza was the first major military operation he had ordered after seven years in power -- a remarkable record in a country that has repeatedly gone to war in its 64 year history.

"People don't realize that Netanyahu is trigger unhappy," said Ehud Yaari, an Israel-based fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

"He is very cautious and very restrained. You could see that this past week. He set very well-defined boundaries and was very careful not to go wild," he added.

Opposition politicians were swift to portray this discretion as a failing, hoping that it will cost Netanyahu votes at a January 22 general election, which all opinion polls prior to the Gaza conflict had said he would win.

"The government displayed weakness and hesitancy in implementing its goals and the promise of achieving complete calm for the residents of Israel," said Yair Lapid, a television personality-turned-politician running in the January ballot.

Israeli daily Maariv also stuck the knife in, printing a cartoon showing a glum-looking Netanyahu carrying an object under his arm marked "backbone for rent".

A group of 16 soldiers marked their disdain by writing out "Bibi (is a) Loser", with their bodies and posting the photograph on Facebook. The image went viral and the army is investigating.

Despite the derision, it is unlikely the decision to avoid a potentially bloody land invasion of the densely populated Gaza Strip will cost Netanyahu the forthcoming election.

No opposition leader in the race comes close to Netanyahu in terms of experience or international stature, and Israel's biggest perceived security threat is still far from resolved -- Iran and its contested nuclear program.

IRAN IN FOCUS

Israel and its Western allies believe Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies this, but Netanyahu says it is an existential issue for Israel and has promised to resolve the matter if he is elected to a third turn in office.

Known universally in Israel by his childhood nickname 'Bibi', Netanyahu has been so focused on Iran that critics at home said he had lost sight of the more immediate problem -- rising rocket fire out of Gaza and into southern Israel.

The Israeli military said Islamist militants had launched more than 700 missiles from Gaza in the first 10 months of the year. With elections looming, Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak could not ignore the problem any longer.

The warplanes were sent in, killing Hamas's top military commander in an initial strike and targeting the group's large weapons arsenal thereafter. Some 162 Palestinians, including 37 children, and five Israelis died in the clashes.

"Both Netanyahu and Barak would have preferred not to go on this operation and only did so when the public made clear that enough was enough," said Einat Wilf, who sits on the Israeli parliament's foreign affairs and defence committee and is a member of Barak's Atzmaut party.

While Barak donned his black bomber jacket and toured the Gaza border lands to see the huge army mobilisation being readied for eventual invasion, Netanyahu stayed in his business suit and avoided eye-catching photo calls near the front line.

"This was deliberate. Netanyahu knew this would not end in the crushing defeat of Hamas because that wasn't ever the goal. He wanted to pose as the responsible adult at the top of the pyramid," said Washington Institute analyst Yaari.

INTERNATIONAL TIES

This stance is likely to have helped ease relations with the leaders of both the United States and Egypt.

The Arab Spring that brought an Islamist government to power in Cairo has raised concerns in Israel, which signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979.

Netanyahu has had famously testy ties with U.S. President Barack Obama and he was accused by some Democrats of trying to undermine Obama's re-election bid.

Dire predictions in the media that Netanyahu would suffer payback did not materialize during the conflict, with Obama fully endorsing what he called Israel's right to self-defence.

When Obama later said it was "preferable" to avoid an escalation, Netanyahu swiftly adopted the same language to show there was no daylight between the two leaders.

Likewise, his decision to rule out an invasion prevented a potentially disastrous diplomatic showdown with Cairo. Instead, he has got Egyptian backing as a guarantor of Hamas's ceasefire.

"There was no decisive victory here, said Giora Eiland, a former National Security Adviser. "But the situation was managed in the right way and it was clear that Israel enjoyed certain international support."

His lowkey handling of the conflict, peppered by regular meetings with key ministers, showed how Netanyahu has developed into a more consensual leader than in his first term in office from 1996 to 1999, when he lurched from one crisis to another.

"He is a policy wonk. He isn't a natural politician," said one of his close advisers, who declined to be named. "But he has come to realize that you need to listen to people and not just pretend. He has become a much more inclusive leader."

If, as expected, he secures a third term in January at the head of another rightist coalition, Netanyahu will once more push Iran to the top of the international agenda, with Gaza returning to its old position as an annoying irritant.

"If the Iranian threat is not neutralized in some way, then that will determine his legacy more than anything else," said the senior adviser.

What You Should Know About Football Betting

Among the many sports in U.K, football (or soccer) has grown so popular. Its increased popularity also made it more attractive for both bookmakers and sports punters, so more and more companies opened to give football predictions and betting tips. So if you are into serious sports betting, you probably search for football betting tips for this weekend to get better chances of winning. Besides, if you will just guess the winning team on your own, you might lose thousands of dollars. Not unless if you do enough research on every team on the league, or if you keep track of all their games. But it is not an easy thing to do, that's why football betting tips are always available. Even those who do not know anything about football or soccer, can bet and win! All they have to do is sign up on the bookmaker's website and place their bets according to the tipster and predictions. If the predictions are correct, they can win more than enough - double, triple, or even four times than their money.

In U.K, there are many local leagues and games that people follow, like the Premier League of England as well as the other similar leagues that happen around Scotland and Ireland. In order to make good bets, you may need to utilize to some football betting tips for this weekend offered by many companies regularly, but some also prefer to do their own research and observations on different teams. By doing this, they save money but their chances of winning may be lower than yours if they happen to miss important information. For instance, the most important thing every bettor should know is the injuries accumulated in each team. If a team got one or two members with injury, especially if those members are the good ones, there is a greater chance that their team will not win. Even the best teams in the leagues may acquire injuries, so do not always go into favorites. You can get information about these things in the bookmakers you pay, so you have a serious advantage compared to those who only observe. If they happen to miss that game or they do not know that there are many injured members on a particular team, they will still bet on it. Therefore, you need to keep track of injury information as well as the details of its recovery in order to maximize your winnings. Find reliable sites that can give you updated information about these things.

Football betting tips for this weekend can be found almost everywhere. Aside from the popular sports websites, you can also find some in magazines, newspapers, online pundits, and from the bookmakers of course. They know much more about the games than you. But in placing bets, always remember that tips and predictions are not always correct. Chances change so always prepare yourself, not only to win but also in losing. It all depends on your research and your trusted predictions.

6 Free IP Databases on the French Patent Office (INPI) Website ...

Most intellectual property offices have their own websites, and these sites can host an incredibly broad variety of information, ranging from national news on patents, trademark, designs, and copyright to instructions on how to register all types of intellectual property.? These websites also often host databases that allow users to search for patents, designs, or trademarks issued by the offices. We?ve spotlighted a few excellent IP office websites in past posts, such as the PRV website of the Swedish Patent and Registration Office, which hosts a user-friendly layout and multiple IP databases for users to search.? The website for the French Patent Office (Institut national de la propri?t? industrielle ? INPI) also hosts the usual news and instructional information on registering patents, trademarks, and designs in France, but the INPI is a stand-out example of an office website which hosts a wide range of intellectual property databases. The INPI website hosts six separate portals which allow users to access French trademarks, designs, patent published since 1978, 19th century patents, patent legal statuses and file history documents,? and IP case law information.

Continue reading for a closer look at six free databases accessible through the French INPI website!

The INPI website only appears to be available in French, although one database (legal status) includes an English-language version of the portal.? Searchers can utilize a machine translation tool (like Google Translate) to translate the site into their language of choice.? From the INPI homepage (viewed in the screenshot below through Google Translate from French to English), users can select the ?Databases? links in the right side menu to access a list of all free databases available through the website. Users can also select each individual link in the side menu to access each database directly.

Databases available on the INPI website.

The six databases accessible through the INPI website include:

  • Brands Database ? Search through bibliographic and legal information on over 3 million trademarks. This database is updated weekly. Search by brand name, classification, registration number, or through an advanced fielded search form. This database only appears to be available in French.

Search French trademarks.

  • Patents Database ? FR_Espacenet gives you access to about 5 million French, European, and international applications (and granted patents) published since 1978. You can view the originals of all applications and patents issued since 1989 and French translations for French EP patents since 2004. A new version of the service, online since February 21, 2012, is presented similarly to the EPO Worldwide Espacenet. The interface only seems to be available in French, although users can choose from a drop-down menu of other country-specific Espacenet portals in various languages.

Search French patent documents in an Espacenet interface.

  • Patent Status Database ? View legal information on FR and EP applications (designating France) from 1989. View information about payment of the last renewal fee in France and documents related to the the issuing process for French applications filed since 2001. Finally, view legal information on supplementary protection certificate (SPC) applications filed at the INPI from 1993. This portal is accessible in both English and French.

Search for the legal status and related documents for French patents and applications.

  • 19th Century Patents ? Search French patents issued from 1791 to 1902. Search by name of applicant or agent or use an advanced fielded search form.? Users can view bibliographic data on these documents or a fully scanned version of the document.?? This portal is only available in French.

View the fully scanned images of 19th century French patents.

  • Designs Database ? Search and view bibliographic and legal information on about 700,000 French designs and 350,000 international designs. French design coverage includes those published since 1910, with images from 1996 (source INPI). International designs includes those published since 1979, with images from 1985 (Source WIPO). The database is updated every 15 days for French designs and monthly for international designs. The database does not include unregistered designs whose publication has been a request for adjournment or those deposited in simplified form.? Search by class or use an advanced fielded search form.? This portal only appears to be available in French.

Search French designs.

  • Caselaw Database - Search national court decisions involving intellectual property, as well as decisions of the INPI regarding opposition brands.?? This portal only seems to be available in French. You can consult judgments and decisions relating to:
    • patents since 1823 (full text from 1997)
    • brands since 1904 (full text from 1997)
    • designs since 1994 (full text from 1994)
    • oppositions brand since 2004 in full text.

Search for French IP case law.

Additionally, users may also download official bulletins from the INPI (Bulletin officiel de la propri?t? industrielle ? BOPI), including BOPI Patents from January 2005 onwards and BOPI Trademarks and Designs from January 2006 onwards.

Conclusion

The French INPI website offers a wide variety of intellectual property databases accessible freely through its website.? These databases include the standard patent, patent legal status, trademark, and design search options, but the case law database and 19th century patent database both contain unique information that isn?t usually available on an intellectual property office website. It would be useful if the INPI search portals had more multilingual search interfaces to facilitate easy searching in languages other than French, but a machine translation tool like Google Translate can alleviate this problem relatively easily.? Professional patent searchers with native-language skills are still the best option for international prior art searches, but users can initially scope a a wide range of French IP data through the INPI utilizing the website?s six databases.

Do you know of other IP office websites that host unique databases? Let us know about them in the comments!

Profitability Challenges Persist in Workers' Comp Sector: Report

The troubled workers? compensation line of business got a break in 2011 as employment and payrolls stabilized and overall net premiums written increased by 10 percent, according to an A.M. Best report.

Overall underwriting results for the aggregated workers? comp line for companies and state funds improved slightly, as the combined ratio declined to 117.8 in 2011, from 118.1 the previous year.

The report, titled ?Despite Favorable Pricing Trends, Profitability Challenges Persist,? says that the premium growth of 10 percent outpaced that of U.S. commercial lines, which saw a reported 4 percent increase in net premiums written for the year.

In addition, the rise in net premiums written for the workers? comp line comes after five consecutive years of declines, from 2006 through 2010, when a combination of competitive pricing, a series of consecutive rate increases (often related to statutory reforms), poor employment and challenging macroeconomic conditions put pressure on the sector.

However, A.M. Best said it expects that profitability for the workers? comp line will remain a challenge despite a more favorable pricing environment, due to an increasingly competitive operating environment and the cumulative effect of rate increases.

The A.M. Best report also notes:

  • Despite the 10 percent increase in net premium written in 2011, premium volume remains 23.8 percent lower than its peak of $49.2 billion in 2005.
  • The largest workers? comp insurers remained unchanged for a third straight year, with Liberty Mutual Insurance Companies retaining its top market position, followed by American International Group.
  • Direct premiums written increased in all but three jurisdictions, excluding those with monopolistic state funds. California, with the highest direct written premium in the United States, posted a 10.1 percent increase in 2011. Of the largest 10 states, New York has the highest percentage increase in DPW, at 14.8 percent in 2011.
  • For the A.M. Best workers? comp composite, which consists of companies that write predominantly workers? comp insurance and includes state funds and experience for non-workers? comp lines of insurance, the combined ratio deteriorated slightly to 123.6 in 2011 from 122.2 in 2010, the highest recorded combined ratio for the composite over the past 10 years.

WorldPoultry - US: Poultry packers ? new 'low' in workplace injuries

Newly-released Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows that US meat and poultry packers and processors continued to make significant progress in workplace safety, as BLS numbers reveal a new ?low? in non-fatal occupational injuries and illnesses in the meat and poultry sector.

In 2011, there were 6.4 cases of occupational injuries and illnesses per 100 workers in the meat and poultry sector, compared to 6.9 in 2010 ? a reduction of 7.2%. In addition, the industry's recordable position versus the overall Manufacturing sector improved by more than 11 percent. The manufacturing sector rate remained unchanged from 2010. Historic BLS data reveal that the meat and poultry industry has shown continuous improvement over the years, halving the injury and illness rate from 14.7 per 100 workers a decade ago.

?The meat and poultry industry's 500,000 employees are an essential and valued resource,? said AMI President and CEO J. Patrick Boyle. ?Ensuring the health and safety of our workforce is good for employees and has business benefits, too, as they can perform their jobs in the best manner possible. Safe workplaces are positively correlated with quality, productivity, cost, turnover, and related measures of industry success.?

According to Boyle, much of the improvement in worker safety over the years can be attributed to two major efforts initiated by the meat industry beginning in 1990. That year, the US meat industry, together with OSHA and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, developed Voluntary Ergonomic Guidelines for the Meat Packing Industry?guidelines that OSHA called a ?model?for other industries. In addition, the AMI Board of Directors deemed workplace safety a non-competitive issue and encouraged their respective company staffs to share information on safety practices. This decision enabled the AMI Worker Safety Committee to pursue a number of safety improvements, including the annual AMI Foundation Conference on Worker Safety and Human Resources, which has occurred annually ever since.

More information about worker safety in the meat and poultry industry is available here. The full BLS worker safety statistics are available here.

Rep. Rush Holt's Advice to His Fellow Scientists on Politics

US-capitolIn 1993, Americans elected the first physicist to Congress: Vern Ehlers, a Republican from Michigan. Just six years later, former assistant director of Princeton?s Plasma Physics Laboratory, Rush Holt, a Democrat from New Jersey, joined him. And in 2008, Fermilab physicist and Illinois Democrat Bill Foster joined them, only to lose re-election in 2010 before regaining his seat this year. At that rate, Holt joked to an audience of mostly chemists at Princeton University on November 9, ?By mid-century, the population of Congress would be physicists.?

But that?s a ?slow way? to inject scientific thinking into the political process, Holt argued. ?I wish we could get more Americans and, hence, their representatives thinking like scientists, which means basing our conclusions on evidence,? he said.

That laudable goal may prove even more challenging than turning a physicist into an electrifying political speaker. Because humans are not born statisticians, thinking scientifically is both technically and psychologically challenging . We prefer a story (anecdote!) to a compilation of statistics (data!). The modern world, as Holt observed of C.P. Snow?s famous analysis decades ago, has become divided into two disparate camps: scientists and non-scientists.

This may be most apparent currently on the subject of climate change. There are more and more data points showing that climate is changing, whether it be the early arrival of spring or the ongoing meltdown of Arctic summer sea ice. Yet, at the same time, a warming Arctic may mean more snow in lower latitudes, a lived experience (or anecdote) that tends to trump statistical abstractions. ?The evidence for climate change is strong enough that we should be taking very bold and very expensive action because the costs of not taking action will be even more expensive,? Holt argued, suggesting that legislation to combat climate change ?probably will be undertaken again, I would guess relatively soon in the next Congress.?

The problem will be convincing Holt?s Republican colleagues in Congress that climate change isn?t a hoax?the three men vying for the chairmanship of the next House Science and Technology Committee all espouse varying levels of doubts about climate change. That challenge is made even harder by the fact that the science makes it unclear exactly how much of an impact the U.S. can have in restraining global warming, rising sea levels and other unsavory results of the ever-increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Politicians?and people generally?don?t do well with uncertainty, and uncertainty is the basic nature of science, whether it be questions of climate sensitivity or the existence of the Higgs Boson.

The fundamental challenge of promoting scientific thinking in decision-making requires more from scientists than simply sending members to Congress. It will require scientists to help communicate what scientific uncertainty means, the realities of probability and statistics, and even the real dividends of investment in research?the only way to continue to produce the goods, services and quality of life that comes currently from burning fossil fuels but needs to come in future from cleaner sources of energy. ?Americans value the fruits of research, but they have hardly a clue how it works,? Holt said. ?I still like to think that I think like a scientist and I would like to see more of that in Congress.?

Of course, one of the first things Holts and other science-friendly Congress members will have to do is figure out how make science sound less like yet another special interest and more like a sound investment. For his part, Holt would like to see the U.S. invest ?tens of billions? more in basic scientific research. He has already helped to secure $22 billion for scientific research under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the stimulus bill. ?I think we will be able to demonstrate that this has a stimulative effect comparable to building roads and bridges,? he argued to the no-doubt-agreeable chemists, who may have been shocked to find out that lab techs, research assistants and post-docs get paid roughly the same wage as construction workers. ?We will get lots of benefits from the kinds of research people in this room are doing with materials or efficiency of combustion or wind capture.?

Indeed, the U.S. needs more failed alternative energy companies like Solyndra, not fewer, Holt argued. ?Not every research project will pan out and that doesn?t mean it?s been a waste. The use is not always predictable,? Holt noted. ?We do need more investments in forward-looking manufacturing processes, more investment in the research and development that leads to those even though some of that will fail.?

The Middle Ground #128 - Robot 6 - Comic Book Resources

This week sees the release in the United Kingdom of Rogue Trooper: Tales of Nu Earth Vol. 3, a collection of the final days of the original run of 2000AD?s cloned science fiction soldier. Re-reading the book this weekend, it struck me how little the kid who read these strips at the time they were published appreciated some of the greatness they offered, how oddly ahead of its time Rogue Trooper was during the period these strips came from, and how surprisingly educational this book is for wonks like me who like to see how the comics sausage is made.

Let?s start with that greatness. Look at this art by Jose Ortiz:

And now look at this art by Ortiz:

Seriously, Ortiz, who?s one of two main artists on the strips collected in the book, the other being a pre-Deadline, pre-Preacher Steve Dillon, just kills with his art here. It?s beautifully delineated, wonderfully clear and concise work, and the kind of thing that makes you wish that more people knew who Ortiz was. The book is worth buying for his art alone, but there?s much more to it than that. For one thing, Dillon?s not the only creator making an early appearance here. There?s also early (mid-1980s) work from Peter Milligan and Grant Morrison to pick through and try and pull future themes from (Milligan?s unreliable narrators! Morrison?s obsession with virtual reality!), and the thing that always, without fail, pulls me into collected editions of old work: watching the creators try to retool and redirection the series while it?s still continuing.

In a way, Rogue Trooper is an avatar for pop culture as we now know it; the original series ran from 1981 through 1989 before being canceled and rebooted, started over from scratch by co-creator Dave Gibbons and artist Will Simpson in a way that, at the time, was almost unheard of outside of the 1950s DC relaunch that heralded the Silver Age (and even then the characters rebooted had been out of the public eye long enough to be forgotten/unknown to their target audience of kids). These days, we?re used to reboots of familiar characters and concepts, but Gibbons and Simpson?s Rogue Trooper reboot came less than a year after the character?s earlier storyline had concluded.

What Tales of Nu Earth Vol. 3 collects are the final stories before the reboot (with the exception of the very final story, a flashback series called ?Cinnabar? set earlier in the series? continuity), and they?re fascinating to read in a historical context, because from the very start, the creators are already trying to come up with a new take on the series; either they were convinced that the ?future war? setting was getting dull for readers or they believed that the series needed a more obvious hook, because there are at least two dramatic shifts in direction within the book ? First, Rogue has to find who has sabotaged peace talks and work with the enemy in doing so, and then, he ends up working with the saboteurs because the peace talks were all a sham and only he can bring about peace by assassinating key figures on both sides of the war. Both have potential to them, but never quite find their feet, and watching the creators stumble and realize the dead ends they wander into has a surreal car-crash quality that?s equally educational and frustrating.

Similarly, the story that brings the continuity to a close is surprisingly abrupt, and the kind of thing that feels more like editorial edict being carried out by impatient creators who nonetheless have genuine affection for the characters ? there?s an entirely unlikely happy ending, after all, a sure sign of sentiment, ending the regular run on somewhat of a bittersweet, exhausted note. (The book actually continues past that, collecting stories from outside the regular 2000AD weekly run from the same period that featured the character, including one by Morrison and Simpson that may have been the thing that got him the gig working with Gibbons on the reboot; it?s great-looking stuff.)

Tales of Nu Earth Vol. 3, then, isn?t necessarily a collection of ?classic? work unless your only definition of ?classic? is ?old?; the art is consistently impressive and successful, but the writing far less so, filled with uncertainty, abrupt changes in direction and tone and narrative dead-ends. But nonetheless, it?s something I couldn?t put down once I?d started, and something I?ve gone back to since that first reading to unpick and try to read between the lines. Even if the idea of a genetically cloned super-soldier fighting to end a future metaphor American Civil War doesn?t sound appealing to you at all, if you have any curiosity about the ways in which creators try to pull apart concepts without unraveling them completely in order to make them work, this is genuinely a must-read book. Find those import copies now, people.

Steelers WR Brown likely out against Chiefs

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The Pittsburgh Steelers have spent all season juggling running backs based on who's healthy and who's hot.

Now it's the wide receivers' turn.

The Steelers will likely be without receiver Antonio Brown when they host reeling Kansas City next Monday night. Brown sprained his right ankle early in a 24-20 victory over the New York Giants last Sunday and coach Mike Tomlin doesn't anticipate Brown being available.

"We'll see where the week takes us, we'll leave the door ajar but usually (sprained ankles) aren't positive things, particularly for someone who earns a living the way he earns a living," Tomlin said.

Brown leads the Steelers (5-3) with 42 receptions and is second on the team with 499 yards receiving. If he can't go, third-year wideout Emmanuel Sanders will likely take Brown's place in the starting lineup.

Sanders caught two passes against the Giants, including a 4-yard touchdown, and added a 63-yard punt return in place of normal return specialists Brown and Chris Rainey, who left the game with a rib injury. Veteran Jerricho Cotchery will move into Sanders' spot as the third receiver.

Cotchery has taken on a smaller role in his second year in Pittsburgh as the trio of Sanders, Brown and Mike Wallace matured, but Cotchery tied for a team-high four receptions against New York, doubling his season total.

"He's not a luxury (but) a necessity," Tomlin said of Cotchery. "We need quality guys that are capable of upholding the standard ... he's been consistently professional and prepared. When one of three guys at the wide out position go down, we don't bat an eye."

Safety Troy Polamalu and right tackle Marcus Gilbert have already been ruled out against Kansas City, though Tomlin believes both can practice this week in a limited capacity. Polamalu played in just two games this season due to a right calf injury while Gilbert has missed a month.

The typically tight-lipped Tomlin is pleased with his team's progress during its current three-game winning streak. The Steelers have gotten consistent performance out of the running game regardless of who is in the backfield.

Isaac Redman rushed for a career-high 147 yards against the Giants in place of Jonathan Dwyer, who sat out with a strained right quad. Dwyer had topped 100 yards in the previous two games while filling in for both Redman and Rashard Mendenhall.

There's a possibility all three backs could be ready against Kansas City, leaving Tomlin with a difficult choice, one he's not willing to make just yet.

"Whoever's being productive when healthy is going to get the totes," Tomlin said. "I really think it's that simple. I'm not going to make it any more complex than it has to be. At times this season we've had a running-back-by-committee approach because none of them had been overly effective at that time.

"When someone's effective, they'll get the ball."

New Jersey drivers refuel with gas cans, funnels to avoid lines

MAPLEWOOD, New Jersey (Reuters) - At home Monday on his sixth canceled school day after superstorm Sandy, New Jersey middle schooler Liam Kafrissen leapt at the offer: $20 per walk to the gas station to stand in line and fill a neighbor's gas cans.

Pulling a little red wagon with three gas cans totaling 5.75 gallons, Kafrissen smiled on his second trip back from the Delta gas station close to his school, still shut without power as the rest of hard-hit New Jersey crawled back to life.

"And I'm still in my pajamas!" Kafrissen, 13, said as he handed off the cans to a neighbor to pour into her car's empty gas tank.

Cars in the gas line at the Delta station averaged a two-hour wait as police officers checked to be sure drivers complied with Governor Chris Christie's gas rationing scheme allowing only those with license plates ending in odd numbers to gas up on odd calendar days like November 5.

People standing in line with hand-held cans - some because they had too little gas in their cars to wait in the line and others to get around the odd-even rationing or to get generator fuel - waited 20 minutes.

"This is my fourth time in line today and I'll be back a few more times," said Tommy Donaldson, 35, of West Orange, New Jersey, an enrichment director at Maplewood's YMCA, clutching the 2.5-gallon can that he used to gas up his car and those of his co-workers.

One of them, Alexandra Nicholson, 21, said even though her car's gas gauge showed the tank was empty, she had to drive to the Y on Monday to hold onto her job.

"I needed to get to work today so I took a very big risk - I was on 'E' coming here," Nicholson said.

Most of those standing in line were using the handheld cans for their cars rather than for gas generators, even as PSE&G fell short of meeting a promise to bring power back to chilly homes in Maplewood on Sunday, pushing back the pledge to later in the week.

"Today, I'm slumming it as a gas collector," said lawyer Aisha Charles, 37, of Maplewood as she carried her gas can home to one of the few houses that did not lose power - and therefore became a haven for six friends and family who moved in to share the warmth.

As for Kafrissen, who is in eighth grade, he soon enough settled back onto the couch for another school day off - fun a week ago but "boring and annoying" by day six - as his mother used a kitchen baking funnel to help the neighbor pour gas from the cans into her car.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: Tetris pumpkin, giant cardboard ghetto blaster and the world's largest offshore wind farm

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green

Hurricane Sandy dominated the news cycle this week as the storm surge flooded large swaths of New Jersey and New York, knocking down trees, crippling the New York subway system and leaving thousands of people in the dark after a ConEd station in lower Manhattan exploded. The storm caused an estimated $10 billion worth of damage in Manhattan and Brooklyn alone, and it caused lasting environmental contamination when 336,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled between Staten Island and New Jersey. And it reminded us of the potential dangers of nuclear power when the storm forced three nuclear reactors offline and New Jersey's Oyster Creek power plant was placed on alert.

ECOWAS governments urged to be more transparent in energy ...

Accra, Nov. 2, GNA ? Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) based in West Africa have called on governments in the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) zone to be more democratic and transparent in energy governance in the sub-region.

They also stressed the need for genuine citizen participation and public-private partnership (PPP) at all levels in all countries since the sub-region had embarked on an ambitious process to develop renewable energy and energy efficiency policies.

Mr Sena Alouka, Executive Director of Youth Volunteer for the Environment International (YVE) based in Togo made this known to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at a high level ECOWAS Energy Minister forum held in Accra under the theme ?Towards sustainable energy for all in West Africa: Paving the way through renewable energy and energy efficiency?.

He said in spite of an enormous potential in fossil and renewable fuels, Africa presents unacceptable energy deficits. ?How is it that the access rate in electricity is around six per cent in DR Congo nevertheless renowned for its unequalled hydro-electric potential and home to the biggest dam of the continent?? he asked.

Sena Alouka expressed regret that the resources of the continent were under exploited, or excessively turned to the market; "Either still wasted during the extraction or during the transportation process".

?As a result, the available supply for the populations is widely insufficient and the energy consumption articulates essentially around the biomass?, he emphasised.

Miss Ines Ahoue, Programme Co-ordinator of YVE in Cote d'Ivoire, said the access rate and availability of energy services in rural and semi-urban areas of the ECOWAS member states was alarmingly very how, adding that, ?This situation cannot help to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015".

She emphasised the need for an ambitious action plan built on existing diversity of new renewable energy potential with a dedicated attention to decentralised solutions, ?if we are to reach the plus 80 per cent mostly in the rural setting?.

Mr Prince Olawuyi, Executive Director of YVE in Nigeria said, ?Not only do big infrastructure not satisfy the need of the majority of the citizens but they also constitute a source of conflict, and poverty for our countries", adding that, ?It is scandalous to see Nigerian citizens flooded under the waves of breaking waters resulting from a dam constructed in another country?.

Mr Lovans Owusu-Takyi, Executive Director of YVE, Ghana, expressed gratitude to the various institutions including ECOWAS Commission (EC), Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE), United Nations Industrial and Development Organisation (UNIDO), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Ghana Energy Commission (GEO) and the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) which graced the occasion with insightful presentations, and expressed their support to the initiatives of the civil societies.

He said the rich presentations enabled all the participants to confirm that access to energy was very expedient for economic development and social justice, adding that &ld
