Common Grammatical Mistakes to Avoid - Education - EzineMark

Communication is the key to success and knowing your words inside out ensures you are able to communicate effectively. Grammar, also known as the study of combining words to form sentences which helps you communicate better is often overlooked by students. As a result, silly mistakes occur in written and spoken communication that can be avoided easily. For example,

  • Loose vs Lose: Loose is an adjective, while lose is a verb. Which means that we use lose to denote action. ?Do not lose this pen?, for instance. ?Loose?, however, is used to describe things: ?This rope is too loose.?
  • You?re vs Your: There is no similarity between these two. ?Your? is a pronoun, and refers to the person you are talking to. Whereas, ?you?re? is a short form (also known as contraction) for ?you are?.
  • Then vs Than: This confuses most people, so pay close attention. ?Then? is mostly used for conditions or situations, while ?Than? is used for comparisons. So, we can say ?Then he jumped off the ledge?, and ?I am stronger than you are?.
  • It?s vs Its: ?Its? is used to show possession, while ?It?s? is a short form for ?It is.? Hence, we can say: ?I like its shine?, and ?It?s not a good book.?
  • Good vs Well: ?Good? is used to describe things. ?Well? is used to describe actions. For instance: ?This is a good book?, ?He played well in that match?.

A good communication gives an edge to the speaker and a right mix of words creates a healthy impact on the mind of the listener creating a lasting impression on his mind.

Similarly, when these words are written, they should be included in the sentence in the right context thereby adding value to the entire article. The list goes on but making a note of the points mentioned above will also help you avoid committing those silly mistakes and enable you to improve your communication skills.?
